 Brahmagiri range is an important part of the western ghats, spread across the Kodagu district of Karnataka and the Wayanad district of Kerala. Brahmagiri trekking through the jungle is a good experience for any nature lover. Especially trips along the paths of tigers and leopards. The trek starts from in front of the Forest Inspection Bungalow in Thirunelly. On the way to Thirunelly from Kattikulam, you can reach the Inspection Bungalow by walking 300 meters on the right side one kilometer ago. You have to enter your name and address at the counter and take a ticket to enter the forest. The trekking starts at 7.30 am. Usually Monday and Friday are holidays here. However, with the advent of the corona and the lockdown, guides here have been allowed to trek every day due to lack of work and income. To reach Brahmagiri, one has to cross several small streams. There are also small waterfalls here as it is a rocky place. After a long walk through the jungle, you can finally reach the Forest Department's Watch Tower. From the top of the Watch Tower, one can see many beautiful views of Brahmagiri and Thirunelly. Below this watchtower is the Forest Department's camping station and a few tents around it. The Brahmagiri peak can be reached by traveling another 2 km from the Watch Tower. When you reach the top of Brahmagiri, The upper part is essentially a good level area and then below it begins the forest area of Karnataka. Brahmagiri, with a maximum elevation of 1608 meter. It is also the highest point in the Brahmagiri Hills. The border between Kerala and Karnataka passes over the Brahmagiri Peak. Karnataka on the left and Kerala on the right. 


Brahmagiri is located at a distance of 32 km from Mananthavady. The Brahmagiri hills are located at a distance of 11 km from Thirunelly. It is possible to come here only with the permission of the forest department.Part of Karnataka is also known as the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. The main attractions of Brahmagiri Hills.



1.Pakshi Pathalam

Pakshi pathalam is a bird by watching center in the middle of the virgin forests. The bird sanctuary is located at an elevation of 1740 M above sea level. This is a beautiful birds watching center. Situated on steep hills, virgin forests, and jungles. This place is home to a wide variety of birds. This place is close to the Karnataka border. At the northern end of the Brahmagiri, large caves at the top of the hills are home to many birds and animals. Tourists can reach the bottom of these cave. There are other caves where various species of migratory birds congregate. There is also an ancient cave here which is believed to have been used by the monks for penance in the past.


Pakshi pathalam


Pakshi pathalam can be reached by trekking 7 km through the forest. Permission from the forest department is required to go to the pakshi pathalam. A guide to the bird sanctuary authorised by the forest department is also available here. Tourists from Karnataka also visit this place on the other side.The Bird Sanctuary in Karnataka is also known as the Munikkal Cave. It is also an area that has been under Maoist threat for some time. Therefore, trekking is prohibited due to security concerns. 

2.Thirunelly temple

It is a place of natural beauty. Thirunelly temple also known as the Sahyamala temple, is surrounded by mountains of kambamala, karimala and varadigamala.
Thirunelly mahavishnu temple is supported by 30 granite pillars. The floor of the temple is paved with large layers of granite. The papanashini stream is located a short distance away from the temple. The temple is situated in the Brahmagiri hills. Thirunelly temple is located in the middle of the wayanad wildlife sanctuary. The temple is located at an elevation of 1740 M above sea level. This highly biodiversity sanctuary is an important part of the Nilagiri hills biosphere reserve. A wide variety of flora and fauna can be seen here. The temple is located at a distance of 30 km from Mananthavady on the kattikulam road. It is believed that immers in the water of papanashini will free one from all sins.

3.Iruppu waterfalls

Iruppu falls or lakshmana tirtha river is another attraction located in the Karnataka part of Brahmagiri. During the monsoon the iruppu falls flows in full swing. It is a beautiful waterfall that Starts from the Brahmagiri hills on the border of Wayanad and Karnataka and ends in the small village of kurchi. The best time to visit this place is during the monsoons. The cascading waterfall gets its full beauty during the monsoon season. The whole forest area is a must see. In the past, it was an area unknown to anyone. But now a lot of people are coming here. The place attracts a large number of people during the season. Iruppu is located at a distance of 36 km from Mananthavady. Go through Tholpetty, Kutta..

There is a Rameshwar temple near the
 Iruppu falls. If is located in the jungle and is located close to the temple. The only way to reach the waterfall is through this temple. located at a distance of 48 km from Kodagu in Karnataka via Virajpet.

When trekking Brahmagiri, carry your ID card, hat, sunglasses, drinking water, sunscreen, trekking shoes, snacks, sneakers and essential medicines in your bag. There are a lot of leeches here as well. Ways to get rid of these should be taken care of with tobacco and salt.
