Thekkady

Thekkady is a tourist destination located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Idukki district of Kerala. Thekkady is located in Kumily in idukki district. Thekkady is a renowned wildlife sanctuary and tourist destination. Many locals and foreign tourists visit this place. The wildlife sanctuary and lake periyar are located close to the Tamilnadu border. The total area of the periyar wildlife sanctuary is 925 square km, of this,360 square km are evergreen forest areas. Many resorts are located in the vicinity of Thekkady. There are many Ayurvedic treatment centers nearby. Spice plantations such as tea, cardamom, Pepper, Coffee etc... are located nearby.

The Main Attraction Of Thekkady.


1.Thekkady Periyar Tiger Reserve.





When you hear Thekkady , you thinks of herds of elephants, dense herds of trees, Flora and fauna and rocks. Thekkady Periyar wildlife sanctuary is one of the best wildlife sanctuary in India. 1965 species of flowers grow here, including 171 species grasses and 143 species of orchids. Many Mammals can be seen here, such as the Asian Elephant, the Bengal tiger, the wild buffalo, the llamas, the wolf, the spotted leopard, and the seahorse. You can also see the ridges between the high cliffs. There are also lion- tailed monkeys in the wild. Monkeys can be seen in large numbers in the boat landing area. It is also  home to a wide variety of birds. Apart from the birds of prey, the Pandanus hornbill and the wild birds you can also see a variety of crows, woodpeckers, Sparrows and some here. many reptiles are also found here,The most important of which are the cobra, the snakes, and the vallikettan. Non- venomous snakes and Monitor lizards are also found here.




A few watch towers have been set up inside the periyar tiger reserve to keep a close eye on wildlife. Reservations can be made at the forest information center ,Thekkady.

2.Boating.




Boating is one of the must- see  activities in Thekkady. The most important attraction of Thekkady boat trip is the view of the wildlife. Elephants, wild buffalo, and deer can often be seen if you are lucky. Herds of Elephants come to to the Periyar lake to drink water . The boat ride through Thekkady lake for one and a half hour . That one and half hour journey offers you a variety of sights. It is run jointly by the Kerala tourism department corporation and the Forest Department. 




Boaters must arrive at the entrance check post at least an hour in advance. The unique identification number and  ID proof orginal obtained at the time of booking should be kept on hand when arriving for boating. Entrance ticket for boating can be obtained from the check post. If the ticket is booked online ,the ticket will be received by email.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking when entering the Periyar tiger reserve. Unauthorised entry in to the forest , drive the vehicle at fast, honking of horns, Parking of vehicles in non parking areas, harrasment of wild animals and trekking without permission are prohibited here. Then it will lead to legal issue.

There is a lot to do here other than boating. Bamboo rafting, jungle skout, nature walk, green walk, border hiking, jungle camp etc...

Visiting Hours: 8 am - 5 pm 

Boating Time: 7:30 am to 9:00 am; 9:30 am to 11:00 am, 11:15 am to 12:45 pm; 1:45 pm to 3:15 pm; 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm respectively.

Entry Fee: For Indians, the entry fee is INR 65 for adults and INR 25 for kids, whereas for foreigners, the fee is INR 500 for adults and INR 180 for kids. Additionally, still cameras are charged INR 38 and video cameras, INR 300. 

Boating Charges: 255 ( per person) Indians. 85 ( per kids) Indians. 500 ( per person) foreigners. 
 
Jeep Safari: The minimum cost is INR 8500 for two persons and INR. 2500 per person up to six people in a Jeep . 

Bamboo rafting: The entry cost for bamboo rafting in Thekkady is Rs 2000 per head. The cost includes bamboo rafting, trekking, packed water, food for breakfast and lunch. The entrance fee for Periyar Tiger reserve to enjoy bamboo rafting in thekkady is Rs 25 per head for Indians and Rs 300 per head for foreigners.

By AirNearest Airport: Madurai, about 140 Km and Cochin International Airport, about 190 Km from Thekkady 

By Train: Nearest Railway Station: Kottayam Railway Station, about 110 Km from Thekkady 

By Road: State Buses operate on a regular basis from the nearby cities like Kottayam, Kochi and Trivandrum.
